The Miami Herald quoted Jorge Espinosa in an article about Havana's La Bodeguita del Medio being recreated in the U.S., and a franchised supper club bearing the name. According to the article, a Cuban-American entrepreneur is set to open a Bodeguita supper club on Coral Way with much fanfare this spring. The Bodequita has nurmerous offsprings around the world which reflects the lure of the brand and a parallel trademark system that sprang from the U.S. economic embargo on Cuba.
The article also states that in Europe and Latin America, the restaurants are Cuban government franchises. But in the United States, they are run by private companies holding the American trademark to the same name. ''The Cuban government has been very aggressive in registering the Bodeguita mark worldwide, but there's no direct involvement in this case that we know of,'' said Jorge Espinosa, an intellectual-property attorney in Miami.
